A Glamourous Night for Electric Mobility at the Bavarian State Award

  • Ilse Aigner presents awards in a festive ceremony to the winners of the Bavarian State Award for Electric Mobility
  • Technical University of Munich, Huber + Suhner, BMW and StreetScooter win categories – Special Award for Lilium

Munich, October 2016 – In the festive setting of the Munich Glyptothek Bavarian State Minister of Economic Affairs and Media, Energy and Technology Ms Ilse Aigner has presented the awards to the winners of the Bavarian State Award for Electric Mobility. This international award was presented in the categories Sustainable Product & Mobility Concepts, Energy Infrastructure & Storage, Powertrain & Electronics and Electric Vehicle. Particularly happy on this special night, that was enchanted by the live performances of French chansonnier Fred Raspail and former “The Voice Kids” finalist Tim Peltzer, were Technical University of Munich, Huber + Suhner, BMW and StreetScooter. In addition to the award trophy they could take home a price money of 15,000 Euro each. The Munich based start-up Lilium Aviation received a special award for its first fully electric vertical take-off and landing jet (VTOL). Laudator for Lilium was Linda Mieden-Appelboom, Department of Economic Affairs of the Consulate General of the Netherlands.

Number of submission doubled – and winners from Bavaria
“With some 70 submissions we have set a new record for our award. We are delighted about this because it proves that electric mobility is no longer a niche product, but on the way to become a mass market. I cordially congratulate all winners and finalists! They have outrivaled numerous very competitive applications – in terms of quantity as well as quality”, said Robert Metzger, Managing Director of MunichExpo and organizer of the b2b trade fair eMove360° Europe 2016.” Ilse Aigner pointed out: “As Bavarian State Minister for Economic Affairs, I am very pleased that so many young as well as renowned companies and organizations from Bavaria joined the competition this year – and were awarded in some categories. At the same time, so many companies and organizations from all over Germany as well as from other countries taking part in the award, emphasizes the importance of Bavaria as a leading technology site.”

The project “aCar Mobility” of TU München was awarded, because it brings mobility to disadvantaged, rural areas. Huber + Suhner makes fast charging of electric vehicles much more comfortable with it’s Cooled Cable System. With the powertrain of it’s Plug-In-Hybrid Model 225 xe BMW has shown as one of the big muanufacturers, that mobility is becoming mainstream. StreetScooter, a subsidiary of Deutsche Post DHL Group, proves that even large companies be flexible and make the turn from being a logistics company to becoming manufacturer of a car, that perfectly meets the demands of local delivery traffic – one of the big drivers of electric mobility.

Winners of the Bavarian State Award for Electric Mobility at a glance:

Sustainable Product & Mobility Concepts

aCar, TU München (Laudatio: Nina Ruge)
The goal of aCar mobility is to generate a coherent vehicle concept that addresses the issues of a rural population which is in the most cases a prisoner of their feet. The developed vehicle will provide better access to healthcare, education and information in the remote areas and thus, it will lead to a better awareness of its problems. The derived vehicle concept will be used as energy source, communication tool or educational device and should build a center of the community live. By using simple, robust and cheap biomedical sensors even basic medical examinations will be feasible. Due to simple design and usage of locally available materials a production in the target area is made possible, even if a few special components have to be imported.

Energy Infrastructure & Storage

Cooled Cable System, Huber + Suhner (Laudatio: Nina Eichinger)
The HUBER+SUHNER charging cable system is designed to reduce charging times by transferring large volumes of electricity. The cables are also designed to be light thanks to their minimal weight and small dimensions, and are easy to use because of their ergonomic design. The realised solution allows the conductor cross section to be reduced from 95 mm2 or 120 mm2, as is required for uncooled cables, to as little as 10 mm2, thereby lowering the weight from 2,800 g/m to as little as 800 g/m and the diameter from 37 mm to 22 mm. Thanks to its grip dimensions, hands large and small can easily get a hold of the plug, while a surface upon which to rest the hand makes it easy to handle the plug and introduce it to the socket on the vehicle.

Powertrain & Electronics

BMW 225xe, BMW (Laudatio: Patricia Riekel)
The installed electric machine is a permanent-magnet-electric-machine, providing a low weight of 31.5 kg, a robust overall design an extreme high 100kW-power. The low weight and high power characteristics of the electric machine were achieved by an innovative combined rotor- and housing-cooling. The patent pending housing of the machine and the unique lost-foam-production-technology for the e-machine housing delivers a highly robust design.

Electric Vehicle

StreetScooter Work, StreetScooter (Laudatio: Hannes Jaenicke)
StreetScooter GmbH designs, develops and produces e-vehicles for short distance travelling and/or transportation. The current range of models covers e-bikes as well as light electric commercial vehicles. Currently, StreetScooter focuses on e-vehicles for last mile logistics operations. StreetScooter GmbH was established in 2010 as a spin-off from RWTH Aachen University and combines leading university know-how with industrial experience. Based on its unique development and production approach, StreetScooter was able to present within less than 18 months a new generation of e-vehicles, the Compact model, in 2011. Series production of this model has commenced mid-2015.

Winner of the Special Award

Lilium Jet, Lilium (Laudatio: Linda Mieden-Appelboom)
The Lilium Jet is the world´s first fully electric VTOL Jet. A range of up to 500 km, a maximum velocity of 450 km/h and zero emission make it the most efficient and environmental friendly means of transportation of our time. By providing ultra-redundancy the Jet will set new standards in safety.

All finalists of the Bavarian State Award for Electric Mobility can be seen in a dedicated exhibiton area in Hall A5, stands 139A-DD
