That is one of the central messages behind a highly topical session at eMove360° Europe 2026:
EU-Africa Cooperation on EV-Battery Minerals
We are pleased to welcome Dr. Alawi Swabury, Founder & CEO of the AFRICA BATTERY-MINERALS INITIATIVE (ABI), to Munich.
Africa holds strategically important resources for the global battery and energy transition. But Alawi Swabury raises a much bigger question:
Should Africa remain primarily a supplier of raw materials – or should a greater share of the battery value chain and value creation take place in Africa itself?
The Africa Battery-Minerals Initiative advocates for critical minerals to be processed and upgraded in Africa before export, while attracting international investment into the complete EV battery value chain.
ABI also brings together investors and companies from Europe, China, the Gulf States and the USA with around 2,500 critical-mineral and rare-earth concessionaires in Tanzania, DRC, Burundi, Mozambique, Rwanda, Zambia, Uganda and Zimbabwe.
This makes the discussion much more than a battery technology issue.
It is about supply chains.
It is about investment.
It is about industrial value creation.
And it is about the future relationship between Europe and Africa in one of the most strategic industries of the coming decades.
