Motorway charging infrastructure: Germany’s first network of fast-charging parks opened at an unmanaged motorway service area

On 5 November, the first fast-charging park at an unmanaged motorway service area was put into operation as part of the German network. The newly opened fast-charging station is part of the nationwide expansion of charging infrastructure by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport and enables electric vehicles to be charged quickly and conveniently. A total of 1,000 fast-charging points are being set up at 200 locations on the motorway network in Germany. The new location on the A21 motorway in Schleswig-HoIstein is operated by Autostrom plus GmbH.

At the opening ceremony, Federal Transport Minister Dr Volker Wissing emphasised: ‘Fast charging, carefree driving: That’s the German network. Anyone travelling with an electric car will find an ultra-fast charging station everywhere in future. Because we are investing in the charging parks of the future. The first motorway fast-charging park in the German network opens today, closing a blank spot on the charging map. By 2026, 200 charging parks will be built on our motorways.’

Dr Michael Güntner, Chairman of the Management Board of Autobahn GmbH des Bundes: ‘With the commissioning of the first fast-charging park at an unmanaged motorway service area, we are driving forward the expansion of the fast-charging infrastructure throughout the entire route network. The opening of this charging park is the first step towards increasing the density of charging points along the motorways. Our goal is to make electromobility a real alternative for everyone and on all routes.’

Dr Burkhard Seizer, Managing Director of Autostrom plus GmbH: ‘Our fast-charging parks on the motorways offer unbeatable advantages: quick access routes, extremely short charging times with our 400 KW chargers and fast onward travel for travellers.’

In the long term, a total of 4,000 fast-charging points are to be created on the motorways. The network is planned so that charging points can be reached every 10 minutes along the motorways. Further information: www.deutschlandnetz.de
