BMW is introducing the German-language version of the new AI-powered BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant.
Naturally phrased dialogues on general topics and vehicle functions open up a new level of interaction. This makes the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant a natural conversation partner.
The system links voice inputs to vehicle functions. Navigation destinations can be entered directly from spoken content. One example is planning a route with multiple stopovers and explanatory background information based on a dialogue conducted in natural language.
BMW is thus expanding the previous use of voice commands to include dialogue-oriented interaction within the vehicle.
The technological foundation is Amazon’s Alexa Custom Assistant. Specific functions based on Alexa+ AI technology for in-car voice interaction are integrated into the vehicle software. Optionally, the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant can be linked to an Amazon account. This makes functions such as music search and streaming via compatible services available via voice command. Activation is done via “Hey BMW” or “BMW.”
“With the new BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, we are setting new standards in human-vehicle interaction through the use of artificial intelligence—both in terms of naturalness and conversational ability. Together with our partner Amazon, we developed the English and German versions simultaneously. We are now delighted to be able to offer this new level of voice interaction to our German-speaking customers for the first time.”, says Stephan Durach, BMW Group – Senior Vice President Development, Digital Services, Infotainment, Connected Company.
Market Launch
The launch will begin in mid-April 2026 in the new BMW iX3 in Germany.
Vehicles of this model already in production will receive the feature via a software update starting in late May 2026. The AI-powered voice assistant will be gradually rolled out to other BMW models equipped with BMW Operating System 9 and BMW Operating System X starting in the second half of 2026.
Summary
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant has been part of the BMW iDrive system since 2018. The new AI-powered version understands language better and enables coherent conversations in natural language. This takes voice interaction in the vehicle beyond individual commands and transforms it into a standalone form of operation.
