New BMW iX5: Electric SUV with New 800-Volt Technology in Final Validation Phase Ahead of Production Start

The new BMW X5 has entered the final stage of its development program. Ahead of the start of production at BMW Group’s Spartanburg plant in the United States, prototype vehicles are currently completing their final validation and calibration drives. The spotlight is firmly on the first-ever fully electric BMW iX5, which is set to become one of the brand’s most important new models.

With the iX5, BMW is introducing its sixth-generation eDrive technology for the first time in a production vehicle. At the heart of the system is a new high-voltage battery featuring cylindrical cells and an 800-volt architecture. With a usable energy capacity of up to 141 kWh (EU specification), the iX5 is equipped with the largest battery ever installed in a fully electric BMW. Power is delivered through electric motors on both the front and rear axles, combined with BMW’s electric xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

Beyond its new electric drivetrain, the iX5 also showcases several technologies developed for BMW’s upcoming “Neue Klasse” generation of vehicles. Among them is the new “Heart of Joy” control system, which coordinates power delivery, braking, steering, charging, and energy recuperation in real time. According to BMW, the system operates up to ten times faster than previous solutions, delivering greater precision, improved efficiency, and an even more refined driving experience.

BMW is also introducing a new generation of SAE Level 2 driver assistance systems. These include an optional Highway and City Assistant with expanded support functions, as well as a range of active safety features such as lane-change warning, side-collision protection, and automated braking functions. BMW’s goal is to create a seamless interaction between driver and vehicle, while ensuring that the driver remains fully in control at all times.

With the new iX5, BMW is not only preparing to launch its most advanced electric SUV to date, but also introducing a range of technologies that are expected to shape the next generation of premium electric vehicles.
