Bosch Drives the Software-Defined Truck Forward

Electrification, automation and software are fundamentally transforming freight transport. Bosch is bringing together technologies from the fields of powertrain, sensors, steering, connectivity and vehicle software with the aim of making commercial vehicles more efficient, safer and increasingly software-defined.

One key building block is the new Rigid eAxle. It integrates the electric motor and transmission into a rigid axle and is designed for commercial vehicles weighing between 18 and 49 tonnes. Combined with silicon carbide inverters achieving efficiencies of up to 99 percent, it is intended to reduce weight and energy consumption compared with conventional electric central-drive systems. The portfolio is complemented by a new high-voltage blower module for 800-volt architectures, designed to make thermal management in electric commercial vehicles more efficient.

At the same time, Bosch is pursuing additional paths towards the decarbonisation of heavy-duty transport. Fuel-cell systems with outputs ranging from 100 to 300 kilowatts are aimed, among other applications, at city buses and long-haul trucks. For hydrogen combustion engines, Bosch already supplies injectors, control units, sensors and components for H2 tank systems. With its cloud-based Digital Fuel Twin, fleet operators can also document the use of renewable fuels such as HVO and verify the associated CO2 savings.

Sensors and artificial intelligence are also becoming increasingly important for automated driving. The MPC4 multifunction camera is designed to improve assistance functions such as lane departure warning and emergency braking through significantly increased computing power and sensor data fusion. A new Generation 7 radar sensor combines Bosch’s own chip architecture with AI-supported signal processing. Both systems are scheduled to enter series production in 2027.

The technological foundation for these functions is increasingly provided by central vehicle computers. Platforms such as the Bosch Vehicle Integration Platform consolidate functions from the Motion, Energy and Body domains and enable over-the-air updates as well as new digital features. Bosch subsidiary ETAS complements this with a software platform supporting different vehicle architectures.

Finally, with its fully electric ServoE steering system, Bosch is also addressing automated driving functions in heavy commercial vehicles. Redundant systems and a cyber-secure software architecture provide the basis for future steer-by-wire solutions – and therefore for commercial vehicles in which hardware and software are becoming ever more closely integrated.
