BYD grows 708 percent in Germany – from niche player to serious challenger

BYD made a remarkable leap in Germany in 2025. According to the company, new registrations increased from just under 3,000 vehicles in 2024 to 23,360 – a rise of around 708 percent.

The percentage sounds spectacular, although the low starting base puts it into perspective. More important for BYD’s long-term position is the infrastructure built alongside that growth: its German sales and service network expanded from 26 to 150 locations within one year, while the product range grew to eleven models – eight battery-electric vehicles and three plug-in hybrids.

The DM-i plug-in hybrids were particularly successful. The SEAL U DM-i led Germany’s plug-in-hybrid registrations in November 2025. At the same time, BYD broadened its portfolio with models including the ATTO 2, DOLPHIN SURF and SEAL 6 DM-i.

Lars Bialkowski, Country Manager of BYD Germany, sees the expansion as evidence that BYD has established itself as a relevant player in the German market within a short period.

The pace is set to continue in 2026. BYD plans further models, the start of European vehicle production in Hungary, the German launch of premium brand DENZA and the rollout of its high-power Flash Charging technology. The company is also relocating its German headquarters from Stuttgart to Offenbach.

The key question for 2026 will therefore be whether BYD can turn rapid growth into sustainable market share. Compared with only a year ago, the foundations are considerably stronger.

BYD also has eMove360° Award history: the BYD DOLPHIN was a finalist in the Electric Car category in 2023.

The eMove360° Award is once again looking for outstanding innovations in Electric & Autonomous Mobility. Late applications are possible until August 31, 2026.
