BYD DOLPHIN SURF
Anyone driving electric can watch the next rise in petrol prices with considerably more ease. With the BYD DOLPHIN SURF, BYD is bringing this independence to the particularly price-sensitive city-car segment.
The compact EV has made a strong start to 2026. According to BYD, more than 2,000 DOLPHIN SURF vehicles were newly registered in Germany in January and February. In February alone, the model recorded 1,220 registrations, placing it tenth in Germany’s entire battery-electric vehicle market.
That is particularly noteworthy in the A-segment. Affordable small electric cars are still relatively rare, as battery costs and narrow margins leave manufacturers little room. The DOLPHIN SURF aims to close this gap, combining compact dimensions with a practical interior and BYD’s Blade Battery technology.
At the time of BYD’s announcement in March 2026, the entry price in Germany was €22,990. With a temporary BYD E-Bonus and the maximum public subsidy available at the time, the purchase price could temporarily fall to €12,990. This brought a new electric vehicle into a price range traditionally dominated by small combustion-engine cars.
Patrick Schulz, Deputy Country Manager at BYD Germany, also sees battery-electric vehicles becoming an increasingly important second pillar for the brand alongside its plug-in hybrids.
BYD Europe B.V. already has eMove360° Award history: the larger BYD DOLPHIN was a finalist in the Electric Car category in 2023. The success of the DOLPHIN SURF shows how quickly BYD is expanding its European EV portfolio towards more compact and affordable vehicles.
