Car connectivity test for electric cars: EQS from Mercedes Benz comes out on top

Which electric car offers the best user experience – the media brand connect has once again tested this. Ten electric cars were compared in terms of ease of use and connectivity: BMW i4, BYD Seal, Ford Mustang Mach-E, Kia EV9, Mercedes-Benz EQS, Nio EL8, Polestar 2, Porsche Macan, Tesla Model Y and Volkswagen ID.7.

As in previous car connectivity tests by the media brand connect, Mercedes-Benz came out on top – with a rating of ‘very good’. The top-of-the-range EQS model impresses with its MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) operating system and outstanding user guidance. The BMW i4 also follows in second place with ‘very good’; the gap to the winner is small. This shows that the Munich-based manufacturer has also caught up considerably in terms of user experience. Porsche (3rd place) and Volkswagen (4th place), both rated ‘good’, were also able to improve significantly compared to the previous year’s tests, in particular by further developing their software quality.

Electric pioneer Tesla is in 5th place with its Model Y, the Swedish-Chinese joint venture Polestar is in 6th place with the Polestar 2, both with a ‘good’ rating. Chinese manufacturer Nio is in 7th place, also with a ‘good’ rating, and BYD is in 8th place with a ‘satisfactory’ rating – both show improvements compared to the previous year. The Korean Kia EV9 achieved 9th place and a ‘satisfactory’ rating. Persistent connection problems impair the quality of the online functions and therefore the user experience. The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes in 10th place and also receives a ‘satisfactory’ rating – although it shows good approaches, it suffers from weaknesses in the operating software.

How it was tested: Each vehicle tested was analysed in detail. In extensive questionnaires, the automotive experts recorded both the equipment of the vehicles and the functionality of the associated smartphone apps. However, the ‘user experience’ made up the largest part of the assessment. Practical application scenarios and task-related tests were carried out to check the operating concepts and user guidance. These evaluations were supplemented by object-related tests in which the operating concept, comprehensibility and screen design of the user interfaces in the vehicle and app were assessed. The focus was on the question of whether the technology is controllable at all times and whether the user enjoys using it.
