Back in 2018, Covestro received the MATERIALICA Design + Technology Award’s highest distinction in the CO₂ Efficiency category: the Best Of Award for Desmodur® eco N 7300.
The innovation addressed a challenge that has become even more important today: how can high-performance materials reduce their dependence on fossil resources without compromising their technical properties?
Desmodur® eco N 7300 was introduced as the world’s first bio-based hardener for lightfast polyurethane coatings. Around 70% of its carbon content comes from biomass, reducing its carbon footprint by approximately 30% compared with comparable fossil-based products.
At the same time, the material was designed as a “near drop-in” solution, offering similar performance and quality to conventional petrochemical hardeners. This made it possible for coating manufacturers to adopt a more sustainable raw material without fundamentally changing established processes.
Applications range from automotive and plastics coatings to wood and industrial coatings – demonstrating how materials innovation can create a measurable sustainability impact across several industries.
Looking back at the MATERIALICA Design + Technology Award 2018, Covestro’s Best Of Award is another strong example of what MATERIALICA has stood for since 2003: bringing material development, engineering, sustainability and design together.
Today, Covestro continues to develop high-performance polymer materials with an increasing focus on circularity and alternative raw materials.
Could your material, product or process be one of the innovations we will look back on in eight years?
Applications for the MATERIALICA Design + Technology Award 2026 are still possible until August 31, 2026.
