Belgium is taking another major step toward zero-emission mobility. Logistics giant Katoen Natie has signed the country’s largest-ever electric corporate fleet agreement with BMW Group Belux, ordering more than 1,000 fully electric vehicles.
The landmark deal marks one of the most significant fleet electrification projects in Europe and underlines the growing role of electric mobility in large-scale corporate sustainability strategies.
By the end of 2027, Katoen Natie will replace more than 1,000 combustion-engine company cars with electric BMW and MINI models. The fleet will primarily consist of the BMW iX1 and the electric MINI Countryman, while upcoming Neue Klasse vehicles such as the BMW iX3 and the new BMW i3 will also be integrated into the fleet. Notably, the Neue Klasse models will feature bidirectional charging capabilities, allowing vehicles to become active components of the energy system.
Electrification as Part of a Broader Energy Strategy
For Katoen Natie, fleet electrification is not an isolated initiative but part of a comprehensive sustainability roadmap. The company already operates extensive renewable energy assets across its sites, including solar and wind power installations, large-scale battery storage systems and intelligent energy management solutions.
“Electrification is not a standalone project but a logical next step within a broader energy and sustainability strategy,” said Joris Verheulpen.
The company is simultaneously investing in charging infrastructure across its Belgian locations. Smart charging systems will optimize charging times based on locally available renewable energy and grid conditions, maximizing the use of self-generated green electricity.
3,350 Tonnes Less CO₂ Every Year
The environmental impact of the project is substantial. According to the partners, the fleet transformation will reduce annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 3,350 tonnes while eliminating the consumption of around 800,000 liters of fossil fuel per year.
For BMW Group, the agreement demonstrates how electric mobility can become an integral part of a wider energy ecosystem.

A Blueprint for Corporate Mobility
Beyond vehicle delivery, both companies plan to deepen their collaboration in areas including charging infrastructure, digital mobility services and logistics solutions.
The project could serve as a blueprint for other corporations seeking to decarbonize their mobility operations while integrating renewable energy generation, storage and intelligent energy management into a single ecosystem.
As governments and businesses across Europe accelerate their climate targets, large-scale fleet electrification projects like this demonstrate that the transition to electric mobility is no longer a future vision—it is becoming operational reality.
