Bayerische Seenschifffahrt GmbH, a company of the Free State of Bavaria, has awarded the contract for the EMS (ELEKTROMOTORSCHIFF) GMUND as a new, fully electrically powered passenger ship for Lake Tegernsee. This will modernise the fleet on Lake Tegernsee. The new ship is expected to replace the MS GMUND, whose name it will take over, from mid-2026. The contract for the new ship was awarded to Lux Werft und Schifffahrt GmbH. The company has many years of experience in building modern passenger ships and is ideally placed to successfully realise this challenging project.
‘The white and blue fleet on Lake Tegernsee is getting an innovative electric ship!’, says Finance and Home Affairs Minister Albert Füracker. “With our new EMS GMUND, we are simultaneously investing in the future of regional tourism and in the protection of our unique natural environment! The ship combines innovation, comfort and the highest standards for accessibility and at the same time sends a strong signal in favour of environmentally friendly mobility, enthuses the Minister.
Bayerische Seenschifffahrt is thus expanding its role as a pioneer for sustainability and electromobility in inland shipping in Germany. Thanks to its all-electric drive, the new EMS GMUND, which will be around 25 metres long and 6 metres wide, is expected to glide across Lake Tegernsee with zero emissions and low noise as early as mid-2026, making an important contribution to climate protection.
In addition to the planned EMS GMUND, Bayerische Seenschifffahrt GmbH has already had a ship with an all-electric drive on Lake Starnberg since 2021 with the EMS BERG. The EMS BERG has become a real flagship for the region: It is very popular with passengers and interested parties and makes an important contribution to emission-free and energy-efficient shipping on Bavaria’s second-largest lake.
