Winner Spotlight: Easyrain – Making Autonomous Driving Safer in Extreme Wet Conditions

How can autonomous vehicles remain safe when one of the most dangerous road hazards occurs: aquaplaning?

This challenge was addressed by Easyrain, winner of the eMove360° Award 2023 in the category Autonomous Driving & Electronics.

Their groundbreaking Aquaplaning Intelligent Solution (AIS) is the world’s first active safety system designed specifically to counter aquaplaning. Instead of reacting after grip is lost, AIS proactively modifies road conditions before the tire reaches the water-covered surface.

Using high-pressure injectors integrated into the vehicle’s bumper, the system sprays a controlled jet of water in front of the front wheels, removing excess water and restoring tire contact with the road. This enables critical safety systems such as ABS and ESC to continue functioning effectively, even in conditions where they would otherwise be compromised.

With approximately 19% of road fatalities occurring on wet roads, technologies that improve vehicle stability in adverse weather are becoming increasingly important—not only for conventional vehicles but especially for the future of autonomous mobility. Easyrain’s innovation demonstrates how intelligent engineering can help save lives and accelerate the safe deployment of automated driving systems.
