The British startup Maeving takes up the tradition of English motorcycle construction and beams it into the sustainable electric age. In its home country of Great Britain, Maeving has quickly and almost silently established itself as a leading manufacturer in the market for emission-free, urban motorcycles. The first model, the RM1, has been the best-selling and one of the best-rated electric motorcycles in Great Britain for the past two years. All Maeving models are developed and built in Coventry in the Midlands, the heart of the British automotive industry. The experienced team of engineers led by Graeme Gilbert, formerly head of product at Triumph, has been responsible for some of the most important British motorcycles over the past quarter century.
With the new RM1S model, which can be ordered now, Maeving is now also launching in Germany and Austria, enabling anyone with a 125cc license to ride quietly and emission-free in the city and beyond. With less than 1.50 euros in electricity costs, they can cover over 100 km. The RM1S with wheel hub motor is also extremely easy to maintain: chain maintenance, oil changes and starting problems are a thing of the past.
The 7 kW electric motor achieves a short-term peak output of 10.5 kW, so that you can overtake quickly even on country roads. The top speed is 110 km/h, the maximum range of the two removable 2.7 kWh batteries (5.4 kWh in total) is around 130 km. The three driving modes – Intermediate – 75 km/h, medium power; Sport – 110 km/h, full power; Eco – 52 km/h, range mode – are valuable assistants for the most economical travel possible.
The batteries of the RM1S can be removed in two easy steps and charged at a normal socket. Alternatively, the Schuko charger can also be connected directly to the bike to charge the batteries in the housing. The distinctive “tank” holds 10 liters of waterproof, lockable storage space. Even if the charger is carried along, there is still space in the tank – for example for a cell phone, which has a USB-C socket.
“With the RM1S, we have an electric motorcycle in our range for all those who want to cover longer distances at higher speeds,” explains co-founder Will Stirrup. “It’s an overused phrase, but we really believe that this is a turning point: an affordable and desirable electric motorcycle that can be used for most urban travel needs, with all the joy and comfort that comes with motorcycling. We are proud of it.”
