Electrified Mountain Deliveries: Austrian Post Deploys 100 Electric All-Wheel-Drive Vehicles

After Austrian Post AG has already made significant progress with the use of electric vehicles in urban centers and rural areas, the next milestone now follows on the path to CO₂-free delivery across Austria by 2030. In mountainous regions, the postal service uses all-wheel-drive vehicles because some mountain roads may only be driven on with AWD and reliable delivery must be ensured even in wintry conditions. Austrian Post is now putting its first 100 all-wheel-drive electric vehicles into operation—marking its first electric operations in the mountains. The company is investing more than four million euros in the purchase of these vehicles.

Peter Umundum, Executive Board Member for Parcels & Logistics, Austrian Post AG: “Deploying our first all-wheel-drive electric vehicles is truly a first! While other fleets are only just beginning to switch to electromobility in metropolitan areas, we at Austrian Post are taking it a step further and bringing CO₂-free last-mile delivery to mountain regions as well. With electric all-wheel drive, we not only ensure reliable, year-round delivery, but also make logistics in Austria consistently sustainable.”

AUSTRIAN POST’S NEW “MOUNTAIN CHAMOIS”: THE MAXUS EDELIVER 7 4X4: Austrian Post tendered the procurement of all-wheel-drive electric vehicles, and only one manufacturer offered a suitable model and submitted a bid: the Chinese manufacturer Maxus with the eDeliver 7 4×4. The electric van has a battery capacity of 88 kilowatt-hours (kWh), providing a real-world range of around 200 kilometers in daily operation. In addition to a cargo volume of 6.7 m³, the vehicle offers various amenities for delivery staff, including air conditioning, parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and assistance systems such as autonomous emergency braking, driver drowsiness detection, and blind-spot monitoring. At delivery bases already equipped with the necessary charging infrastructure, the electric AWD vehicles are continuously replacing older diesel AWD vehicles.
