Anyone who follows the eMove360° hotel series will have long since realized that we prefer to recharge our batteries in alpine hotels. But this time, we’ve headed north: HafenCity’s oldest building is now home to the 25hours Hotel Altes Hafenamt. In the former captain’s quarters, port history comes alive. Its 49 individually furnished, cozy “cabins,” varying in size and style, combine maritime charm with modern design and offer weary travelers a temporary home away from home. The “Mare” reading room is a cozy retreat. Should it rain, you can browse one of the 300 books with a fine cup of coffee. In bright sunshine, we tend to head out onto the terrace and then into Hamburg’s HafenCity. The lively Überseeboulevard connects the Elbe River with the famous Speicherstadt (warehouse district). We use the hotel’s rental bikes to cycle along the Elbe and later to the Alster Lake. We’ve been wanting to visit the Elbphilharmonie for a long time, so we head up to the observation deck between the brick base and the glass new building, gazing from a height of 37 meters over the mighty containers of Hamburg’s harbor and the sea of buildings in the city. We continue on to the Landungsbrücken (landing bridges), the fish market, St. Pauli, the Reeperbahn—we even take a look at the famous Herbertstraße—the Schanzenviertel (quarter), the Planten un Blomen park, the Binnenalster (inner Alster lake)… There’s so much to discover, including in the hotel. We relax on the “sauna deck” on the 6th floor. Afterwards, we head down to a gourmet paradise: the hotel’s Israeli restaurant NENI, named after the four Molcho brothers Nuriel, Elior, Nadiv, and Ilan, combines family tradition with culinary creativity. The dishes are served in the Balagan style, meaning all plates are distributed around the table and shared. For us, it’s curry mango hummus, beetroot hummus, grilled artichoke hearts with capers, and grilled wild-caught prawns with beluga lentils, ginger, red chili, coriander, and Greek yogurt. We’ll have a nightcap at the “Boilerman Bar,” famous for its highballs. They don’t require a shaker and consist of fine spirits served in a frozen glass with two scoops of ice. Highballs, incidentally, are also the bar’s namesake. The signal that indicated when the train drivers should increase speed and when the fireman needed to fire up the furnace to get the locomotive running. We get going, or rather, into our “cabin,” quite late, and the cozy 25hours sleep sheep warms our feet in the wide king-size bed.
