While in March or April in more northerly latitudes, winter sends out a strong signal once again, just a few hours’ drive from Vienna or Munich, walks by the sea in the warm spring sun beckon: Opatija (Abbazia), the legendary seaside resort of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, which was officially declared a climatic health resort by imperial decree more than 130 years ago, presents itself in a sea of pink flowers. The history of the camellia is closely linked to the history of Opatija: 200 years ago, it conquered Central Europe and has been recognised as the city’s floral trademark ever since.
