Sometimes an award winner tells more than just the story of a product. Sometimes it tells the story of a vision.
When EVUM Motors won the eMove360° Award 2024 in the category Electric Utility Vehicle with its EVUM transporter, the jury was not only recognizing an innovative electric vehicle. It was also honoring the successful journey of an idea that had started years earlier at the Technical University of Munich (TUM).
The EVUM is a robust, fully electric utility vehicle designed for municipalities, agriculture, forestry, landscaping and many other professional applications. Thanks to its modular architecture, the vehicle can be configured as a tipper, flatbed transporter or equipped with a wide range of attachments. Its zero-emission drivetrain, low maintenance requirements and practical usability make it a sustainable alternative for everyday work in demanding environments.
What makes this story special, however, is how it all began.
Back in 2016, the TUM research project aCar convinced the jury and won the Award. The goal was to develop a robust, affordable and sustainable electric vehicle for rural regions. The concept focused on local production, electric mobility, high payload capacity and versatile applications. The vision was simple but ambitious: to provide mobility solutions where conventional vehicles are often too expensive or unsuitable.
Remarkably, many members of the jury that recognized the potential of the aCar project are still part of the eMove360° Award jury today. In this way, they have witnessed the entire journey from university research project to award-winning production vehicle.
From this research project, the start-up EVUM Motors was born. A prototype became a production vehicle. A student idea evolved into a company with customers, real-world applications and vehicles operating in municipalities, forestry and agriculture.
Stories like this demonstrate why innovation deserves support. The path from university research to a market-ready product is long, challenging and often full of risks.
Unfortunately, the story of EVUM Motors also took a tragic turn. Despite its innovative product, numerous awards and growing attention for sustainable utility vehicles, the company eventually faced financial difficulties and entered insolvency proceedings.
Yet this, too, is part of the reality of innovation. Not every company survives. But the ideas, technologies and people behind these projects often continue to shape industries long after a company itself has disappeared.
The EVUM therefore remains an impressive example of how academic research can become a real mobility solution—and why young companies, start-ups and research projects need platforms that provide visibility and recognition.
