Ford sharpens the Mustang Mach-E: More range, smarter tech and a retro-inspired GT California Special

Ford is further refining its all-electric SUV, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, with a package of updates that combines improved efficiency, expanded driver assistance features and a design-led special edition inspired by American muscle car heritage.

At the center of the update is the new Mustang Mach-E GT California Special, a model that blends electric mobility with classic Mustang styling cues. Drawing inspiration from the original 1968 California Special, the new edition translates West Coast flair into the EV era. Visual highlights include 20-inch alloy wheels in Carbonised Grey, accented by a GT/CS logo in Rave Blue, and a distinctive bonnet stripe featuring sunset-inspired graphics and California Special branding.

Inside, Ford continues its push toward premium yet durable materials. The cabin features Navy Pier ActiveX and Miko upholstery, complemented by reflective blue and silver accents. The use of synthetic ActiveX material underscores a broader industry shift toward more sustainable and easy-care alternatives to leather.

Efficiency gains and extended range

Beyond design, Ford has focused on incremental but meaningful efficiency improvements. New low rolling resistance tyres extend the driving range of the Premium Extended Range variants to up to 615 km (RWD) and 555 km (AWD). While the increases—15 km and 5 km respectively—may appear modest, they reflect the ongoing optimization typical of maturing EV platforms.

Expanded driver assistance and safety

Technology updates also play a central role. Ford is expanding its advanced driver assistance portfolio, including the rollout of its “hands-off, eyes-on” system BlueCruise 2, which is expected to be introduced across additional Ford models from summer 2026.

A notable new feature is Clear Exit Assist, designed to reduce so-called “dooring” accidents in urban environments. Using sensors to detect approaching cyclists or pedestrians, the system warns occupants before opening a door into potential danger—an increasingly relevant function as micromobility traffic grows in cities.

New colours and broader appeal

The visual refresh extends across the lineup with new exterior finishes such as Race Red and Adriatic Blue-Green, adding further personalization options for customers.

Evolution rather than revolution

With these updates, Ford is not reinventing the Mustang Mach-E but rather refining it. The combination of slightly increased range, enhanced safety features and emotional design elements—embodied by the California Special—demonstrates how legacy brands continue to evolve their electric offerings.

In a highly competitive EV market, such continuous improvements are becoming essential. Ford’s strategy suggests a clear direction: pairing technological progress with brand heritage to maintain relevance as electrification accelerates.
