Freudenbergs Award-winning battery safety before e-mobility became mainstream

Back in 2018, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies received the MATERIALICA Gold Award in the Material category for an innovation addressing one of the key challenges of electric mobility: battery safety.

As lithium-ion batteries became more powerful and energy-dense, preventing thermal runaway from propagating from one damaged cell to an entire battery module became increasingly important.

Freudenberg’s answer was an innovative heat shield for prismatic and pouch cells. The solution combined a heat-resistant, silicone-based elastomer with a waffle-like structure containing tiny air pockets. The result: high thermal insulation with almost no additional installation space.

What makes this 2018 MATERIALICA winner particularly interesting today is how the technology has evolved.

Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has continued developing thermal barriers for electric vehicle batteries. Today, the company offers high-performance 2D and 3D thermal barriers designed to slow down or prevent thermal propagation and protect critical battery components – demonstrating how an award-winning material innovation can develop into an entire technology field.
