Growing Numbers of Stationary Battery Storage Systems

In addition to soaring numbers of electric cars and e-bikes, the amount of stationary battery storage systems in Germany has risen dramatically in the past few years. This was determined in a comprehensive analysis undertaken by JARA-ENERGY, the joint energy research alliance between Forschungszentrum Jülich and RWTH Aachen University. The analysis showed that most stationary batteries are purchased for private use as electricity storage units for photovoltaic systems. The cumulated capacity of these batteries in 2018 was approximately 930 MWh, the equivalent of a medium-sized pumped-storage power plant. There was also a considerable increase in the number of large-scale stationary battery storage systems, for which a total capacity of approximately 550 MWh was recorded in 2018; these are primarily used to stabilize the power grid.
