Germany Ranks Sixth in EV Readiness – but Leads in Willingness to Switch

Germany remains among Europe’s leading markets for electric mobility and charging infrastructure. In the new HERE-SBD EV Index 2026, Germany ranks sixth together with Austria among 30 European markets assessed. Norway and the Netherlands share first place, followed by Belgium, Denmark and Luxembourg.

Published annually by HERE Technologies and SBD Automotive, the index evaluates both EV charging infrastructure and the maturity of electric vehicle adoption. The analysis is complemented by a survey of more than 4,000 drivers in the United States, Europe, India and Australia.

One of the most striking findings concerns future purchase intentions: 27% of surveyed internal combustion engine vehicle owners in Germany say they are most likely to buy or lease an electric vehicle as their next car. This is the highest figure among all markets included in the survey.

The practical experience of EV drivers with charging infrastructure also paints a comparatively positive picture. Nearly two-thirds – 64% of German EV owners – say they have never avoided a trip because of concerns about the availability of charging stations. This is the highest proportion among the European markets covered by the survey.

At the same time, a considerable perception gap remains. Only 39% of all German respondents rate the availability of public charging stations in their local area positively. Among actual EV owners in Germany, however, this figure rises to 59%.

The findings suggest that drivers who regularly use public charging infrastructure tend to view it much more positively than motorists without first-hand EV experience. As electric mobility continues to expand, practical experience with electric driving and charging could therefore become increasingly important alongside the further development of the charging network itself.
