Kia’s electrification strategy for Europe: Production start of the EV4 in Slovakia

Kia has taken the next important step in its electrification strategy for the European market: production of the new EV4 has started at the Kia plant in Zilina, Slovakia. The hatchback version of the compact car, which was developed specifically for European customers, is the brand’s first fully electric model to be produced in Europe. It will roll off the assembly line exclusively at Kia Slovakia following a comprehensive modernization of the plant’s production lines. Based on the E-GMP (Electric Global Modular Platform), the EV4 offers a balanced combination of performance and efficiency. It is available with two battery variants (58.3 and 81.4 kWh), which can be fast-charged from 10 to 80 percent in around 30 minutes, and has a range of up to 625 kilometers (with an 81.4 kWh battery and 17-inch wheels). Innovative technologies include the V2L (Vehicle-to-Load) function for connecting 220-volt devices and the V2X hardware preparation (V2H/V2G), which enables the vehicle battery to be connected to the private or public power grid (depending on the equipment). The hood is made of aluminum, reducing weight and improving handling. Customers can choose from eight exterior colors, including a matte finish (available for an additional charge).

Designed based on Kia’s “Opposites United” design philosophy, the hatchback model sets a striking new tone in the aesthetically rather traditional C-segment. Its side view, with its low nose, elongated silhouette, and sloping rear window, is particularly distinctive. This innovative, versatile, and sporty all-rounder, which was first unveiled to the public in February 2025, is intended to facilitate the transition to e-mobility for a broad range of customers.

Plant modernized for €108 million, exports to 83 countries: Kia’s Slovakian plant is a cornerstone of the company’s European operations. Opened at the end of 2006, the production facility, built on a site of almost two square kilometers, is strategically located to supply key European markets. The plant employs approximately 3,700 people and features more than 600 state-of-the-art robots. In the five production areas – press shop, body shop, paint shop, engine production, and final assembly – various models can be manufactured simultaneously. As part of the modernization, which involved an investment of €108 million, the production lines were equipped with new technologies, including a conveyor belt for electric vehicle batteries in the chassis line of the final assembly hall.

The plant also produces models such as the Kia XCeed and the Kia Sportage – including hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, which accounted for around 25 percent of total production in 2024. The plant has an annual capacity of 350,000 vehicles and 540,000 engines. Since its opening, more than five million vehicles have rolled off the assembly line in Zilina. This means that the Slovakian site accounts for approximately 11 percent of Kia’s global production, and vehicles are exported to 83 countries.

Through sustainability measures, Kia Slovakia has reduced electricity consumption per vehicle by 11 percent, water consumption by 28 percent, and CO2 emissions by 13 percent since 2014. The plant is now powered entirely by electricity from renewable sources. Furthermore, plans are in place to cover approximately 1.5 percent of total energy needs with a new photovoltaic system by the end of this year.
