Is it really coming? The e-car from Volkswagen for 20,000 euros

According to reports in Spigel, on Focus.de and msn.com, Volkswagen wants to launch an electric car for 20,000 euros from 2027. The announcement caused a stir, as the price is considered ambitious. In order to reduce costs, a tried and tested concept could be revived, as reported by Focus.de and Spiegel. A decision on the production site has yet to be made. Three plants are being discussed: Palmela in Portugal, Poznan in Poland and Mladá Boleslav in the Czech Republic. Germany has been ruled out as the production costs there are too high. VW boss Oliver Blume emphasises that the company’s own battery factory in Sagunt, Valencia, is an advantage for the plant in Palmela. At the same time, the project could be outsourced to the Czech Republic, where e-models are already being successfully produced.

Low-cost production alone will probably not be enough to maintain the price limit of 20,000 euros. According to Spiegel, VW is therefore considering cancelling a component that is actually mandatory: the infotainment screen. This decision is described as part of the internal ‘Bring your own device’ concept, which has already been applied to the e-Up. This is actually standard in modern cars, but the driver’s smartphone can also play music and plan the route, they say. Sources: www.msn.com; www.focus.de; www.spiegel.de
