MATERIALICA Design + Technology Award 2022: Winner in the “Student” category Joline Kaumanns with Abundance of light

At the 20th MATERIALICA Design + Technolgy Award, the jury of experts chose Joline Kaumanns with “Abundance of Light” in the Student category. The award ceremony took place on 5 October as part of eMove360° Europe, 6th International Trade Fair for Electromobility and Autonomous Driving at the Berlin Exhibition Grounds.

“Abundance of Light” means “light abundance” and thus implies differentiated, complementary material properties of the developed sample. Materials such as Swedish sheep’s wool, paper yarn and recycled cellophane are used with sustainability in mind. These components are linked together in a woven knitted fabric. The individual parts of the surface visually interlock. The reverse side is a loose left-to-left knit, which gains strength from paper yarn. It gives the material a voluminous feel and provides air pockets. In addition, lanolin makes it water-repellent and dill, the national spice of Sweden, gives it further multi-sensory properties.

APPLICATION: The application and use possibilities are very versatile. They range from clothing to automobiles to interiors. The sandwich material is reversible and can therefore be used from both sides. For example, the woven side can be used as reinforcement in the knee area or other areas that are subject to stress. Due to the firm surface, the protective function is of great relevance. The loose knitted fabric of the Ab side has a springiness and a pleasant padding due to the firmness of the paper yarn. Air pockets are created for good ventilation and heat retention. The knitted fabric of firm paper yarn picks up dirt well, which can be used functionally for a doormat, for example. The material can be sustainably reused within the natural cycle.

FUTURE PROSPECTS: Due to the differentiated material properties, the material can be used in a multifunctional and sustainability-oriented way. This innovative composition of the individual surfaces creates a special and avant-garde design language. This draws the eye to the exciting textile structure of the surface. The paper yarn and its combination with various materials can be used flexibly and will continue to form a textile solution in the future. It allows for many possibilities with perspective, both in design and in processing, and creates natural light impulses that originate in Sweden.

Materials such as wool, paper yarn and recycled cellophane are used with sustainability in mind. These components are joined together in a woven and knitted structure as a sandwich material. The individual parts of the surface visually interlock. The loosely knitted ab side gives the material a voluminous feel and provides air pockets. Lanolin makes it particularly water-repellent and dill, Sweden’s national spice, gives it further multi-sensory properties. The material can be returned to the natural cycle in a multifunctional and sustainability-oriented way.
