Mazda Motor Corporation has announced the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Japan for battery modules made from cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells for use in electric vehicles. The new factory will manufacture battery modules from cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells purchased from Panasonic Energy. By manufacturing the battery modules in-house, Mazda is able to optimally design them for the needs of future Mazda electric vehicles in terms of battery and thermal management.
The annual production capacity of the production facility is planned at 10 GWh. The finished battery modules will be used in a new, all-electric Mazda vehicle based on a special electric vehicle platform and manufactured by Mazda in Japan. In the area of high-voltage batteries, one of the key components for electrified vehicles, Mazda signed an agreement with Panasonic Energy in May 2023 to supply cylindrical lithium-ion batteries for use in electric vehicles. In September 2024, the plan to expand battery production and technology development through this cooperation was certified by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) as a “Plan to Ensure a Stable Supply of Storage Batteries”.
