Mercedes-Benz setzt auf Videodaten aus dem Alltagsverkehr zur Weiterentwicklung von Fahrassistenzsystemen und zur Verbesserung der Verkehrssicherheit für alle. Mercedes-Benz relies on video data from everyday traffic to further develop advanced driver assistance systems and improve road safety.

Greater safety on the roads: How image data from real traffic contributes to this

Mercedes-Benz is taking a decisive step toward the future in the further development of driver assistance systems and automated driving functions: since the end of July, the company has been using sensor and video data from its customer fleet to improve its ability to recognize different road users and atypical traffic situations in the future. The aim is to increase road safety for everyone – a further contribution towards “Vision Zero,” the goal of zero road deaths in the European Union by 2050.

Data collection will only take place with the consent of vehicle owners. In addition, the company will provide transparent information about the procedure and the use and processing of the data. “Our vision is clear: road traffic must be safe for everyone. This requires high-quality data. Driver assistance systems and automated functions can only respond reliably if they are trained with realistic and diverse data. In the future, this will be based on image data from customer vehicles. Our standards for data protection are just as high as our standards for safety. Our customers and all road users can rely on this. This is the basis for the acceptance of automated and connected driving.” Renata Jungo Brüngger, Member of the Board of Management for Integrity, Governance, and Sustainability at Mercedes-Benz

Data diversity as the key to road safety: The increasing complexity of road traffic places high demands on assistance and automation functions in vehicles. The more realistically the systems are trained, the safer and more reliable they behave in everyday use. Until now, Mercedes-Benz has relied on data collected from test vehicles worldwide. In order to train automated systems to reliably recognize all types of road users and situations, diverse and real data from traffic situations is necessary.

The supplementary image data from customer vehicles will enable the systems to respond even better to rare groups of people such as children, pedestrians, cyclists, and people with limited mobility. The aim is to train the systems with the wide range of situations they will encounter in real-world use. Rare traffic situations, such as temporary traffic management or pop-up bike lanes, or unusual behavior by road users are also included in the training data.

The diversity of data from customer vehicles also helps to identify potential hazards in road traffic. This means that safety can be improved not only in the vehicle itself, but also in the future through adapted traffic management or infrastructure measures. The continuous knowledge gained from the customer fleet is incorporated into the optimization of driver assistance systems via software updates.

Focus on data protection: Data protection and data security are a high priority at Mercedes-Benz. The company follows the principles of “privacy by design” and “privacy by default”: Data protection and IT security are firmly anchored in the product development process. Video data from customer vehicles is stored temporarily on a location- or event-based basis only – for example, during heavy braking maneuvers – and then selectively transmitted to the Mercedes-Benz backend. There, it is usually anonymized and separated from the vehicle identification. Mercedes-Benz customers decide whether they want to make their vehicle data available and can revoke this decision at any time. Road users who may have been captured by the image data collected by vehicles can contact Mercedes-Benz, stating the location and time, and request the deletion of any recordings.
