On June 1, Mercedes-Benz laid the symbolic foundation stone for a new competence center for research and development of future generations of batteries and battery cells on the premises of its main plant in Stuttgart-Untertürkheim as part of a ceremony. The so-called “Mercedes-Benz eCampus” is to be gradually put into operation from 2023 and will initially house a factory for small series production of battery cells, among other things. By the middle of the decade, a battery safety lab and various test benches for testing and testing new battery generations will complete the eCampus. Untertürkheim is thus consolidating its role as a high-tech location for drive technologies as part of the “Electric Only” corporate strategy. Investments in the three-digit million range in the construction and design of the eCampus underpin the future viability of the almost 120-year-old traditional location.
