Mobileye to Launch Its Own Robotaxi Service and Target 17,000 Autonomous Vehicles

The company intends to launch its first autonomous ride-hailing service in a major U.S. metropolitan area in 2027, initially operating a fleet of around 100 fully driverless vehicles. If the pilot phase proves successful, Mobileye plans an ambitious expansion to approximately 17,000 robotaxis over the following five years.

Until now, Mobileye has primarily focused on supplying autonomous driving technology to automakers and mobility operators worldwide. With the new initiative, the company will combine its autonomous driving platform Mobileye Drive with the mobility services and fleet management capabilities of its subsidiary Moovit, creating a complete end-to-end robotaxi ecosystem.

According to Mobileye, the new business model will integrate autonomous driving technology, fleet operations, mobility management, teleoperation infrastructure, rider applications, and multimodal trip planning within a single organization.

Autonomous Mobility Reaches the Next Stage

Prof. Amnon Shashua electricmobility, founder and CEO of Mobileye, sees the move as a logical next step for the company.

Shashua emphasized that Mobileye remains committed to supplying its technology to automotive manufacturers and mobility providers. However, operating its own robotaxi fleet will allow the company to accelerate market adoption, gain operational experience, and demonstrate the full capabilities of its autonomous driving platform under real-world conditions.

Leveraging Decades of Autonomous Driving Experience

Mobileye’s confidence is based on more than 25 years of development in computer vision, mapping, sensing, and autonomous driving technologies. The company states that more than 230 million vehicles worldwide have been produced with Mobileye technology integrated into their systems.

A key role in the new robotaxi business will be played by Moovit, whose mobility platform currently serves more than 1.7 billion users across over 3,500 cities in 112 countries and 45 languages. The combination of Mobileye’s autonomous driving expertise and Moovit’s mobility ecosystem is intended to create a scalable global robotaxi platform.

Growing Competition in the Robotaxi Market

Mobileye’s announcement comes at a time when autonomous mobility is rapidly moving from pilot projects toward commercial deployment. The company’s strategy differs from many competitors by combining technology development, fleet ownership, and mobility services within a single business model.

If successful, the initiative could establish Mobileye as one of the major global players in the emerging robotaxi industry and further accelerate the transition toward autonomous, AI-driven mobility.
