Thinking European about sustainable mobility: New Seed Fund initiative launched

A new online exchange module has been strengthening teaching cooperation between seven Unite! universities since the summer semester of 2025 – with a focus on sustainable mobility in climate-resilient cities. The Unite! Sustainable Mobility Forum (U!SMF) is funded by the Unite! Seed Fund for Teaching and Learning. Around 120 master’s students from the Unite! Alliance and the EIT Urban Mobility Master School are participating.

The aim is to promote a European perspective on sustainable transport and stimulate critical reflection at the intersection of mobility, climate protection, and digital innovation. The forum is offered via the Unite! Metacampus platform, comprises up to 12 ECTS credits, and is aimed at students from engineering, urban planning, mobility research, traffic and transport, and related disciplines.

Networked knowledge, shared discourse: As a recurring, year-round format, the U!SMF combines academic lectures, interactive discussions, and contributions from experts from industry and politics. Professors from seven Unite! universities lead the seminar series and contribute their expertise in sustainable transport systems, transport engineering, logistics, and artificial intelligence.

By involving external experts and the interested public, the forum aims not only to strengthen knowledge exchange within the alliance, but also to contribute to the European discourse – and to raise awareness of the transport sector as a key lever for achieving climate goals.

Coordination by TU Darmstadt: The program is led by Prof. Dr. Eva Kaßens-Noor (Ph.D. MIT, TU Darmstadt), supported by Niklas Suhre. Together with local coordinators from the Unite! universities, the team organizes two seminar cycles annually – including a kick-off workshop, ongoing evaluation, and continuous development. “The UNITE! Sustainable Mobility Forum is an outstanding opportunity for students to understand mobility in European cities and learn how stakeholders are shaping a resilient European transport system through best practices, new solutions, and inventions.” Prof. Eva Kaßens-Noor, Head of the Institute of Transportation Studies (IVV), TU Darmstadt

Participating researchers: Eva Kaßens-Noor – Professor, IVV, TU Darmstadt; Niklas Suhre – Doctoral Student, IVV, TU Darmstadt; Francesc Robusté – Professor, BIT, UPC; Francesc Soriguera – Associate Professor, BIT, UPC; Miquel Estrada – Associate Professor, BIT, UPC; Bruno Dalla Chiara – Professor, DIATI, PoliTO; Erik Jenelius – Professor, Transportation Planning, KTH; Luis de Picado Santos – Professor, IST, ULisboa; Filipe Vilaça Moura – Associate Professor, IST, ULisboa; Agnieszka Tubis – Associate Professor, Department of Operation of Technical Systems, PWR; mstMilos Mladenovic – Associate Professor, Spatial Planning and Transportation Engineering Group, Aalto
