New Shell electromobility study: confidence in range increases sharply

Confidence in the range of electric vehicles is rising sharply in Germany – this is one of the findings of the latest Shell Recharge electric mobility study. As a key player in the industry, Shell is presenting the annual study for the seventh time. The energy company is one of the top 4 providers of e-charging stations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The results of the latest Shell electromobility study confirm the trend towards greater trust in e-mobility. In Germany, around 64% of respondents are satisfied with the charging offer and around 51% are less concerned about range than they were twelve months ago. At the same time, the charging experience is also becoming more important – charging should be quick. Around 37% of respondents are prepared to pay more for fast charging. And: the offer during charging – especially in the shop area of a petrol station – must be right: 69% of respondents would drive further distances to get an attractive offer for the duration of the charging time. Every second e-driver is annoyed by the many apps. 71% would like to have the ‘one and only app’ for everything to do with charging.

‘Emissions in the transport sector must fall. That’s why more drivers are switching to electromobility. We want to be the provider of choice and offer our customers attractive charging options at and beyond the petrol station, whenever and wherever they want to charge their car,’ says Florian Glattes, Head of Shell’s petrol station business in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.’ With around 1,500 fast charging points and over 1,000 AC charging points, Shell is currently one of the leading providers in Germany. Our goal is to offer a public charging network with 200,000 charging points worldwide by 2030.’

The study shows: Once you’re hooked, you stick with it: more than a quarter (26%) of German e-drivers already own their second e-vehicle. Only 38% of German e-vehicle owners also own a car with a combustion engine. The more confidence in the range grows, the more distance e-drivers cover with their car. Around 30% of private e-drivers already drive more than 15,000 kilometres per year on average, more than the average for private combustion engine drivers. E-drivers praise the fact that they save money and have less of an impact on the environment compared to a combustion engine.

Methodology of the report: A total of 33,696 interviews were conducted for the study in the USA, China and Europe (Austria, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the UK). This included 9,397 in Germany, with both private and commercial drivers of electric cars and combustion engines being included.
