Finnish manufacturer of electric drivetrains for heavy duty vehicles on land and sea Visedo is set to deliver breakthrough electrification of new marine applications after signing partnership deals with two industry-leading firms.
At this year’s Electric & Hybrid Marine World Expo in the Netherlands’ capital, Visedo announced partnership agreements with international marine technology specialist Kongsberg Evotec and global marine propulsion innovator Veth Propulsion. Both partnerships will see Visedo deliver its market-leader technology for new electrification solutions for marine applications.
As part of the agreement with Kongsberg, Visedo will develop and produce power solutions for fully-integrated electric deck handling winches, to replace traditional hydraulic winches – the first time electric components will be fully integrated on-deck into the winch. Visedo’s technology will allow Kongsberg to offer a new era of electric winches with full system integration and system control.
Under the agreement with Veth Propulsion, Visedo will produce electric-powered thrusters featuring Visedo’s market-leading permanent magnet (PM) motor technology. The two companies have co-developed the Integrated L-Drive, a highly compact, high-efficiency electric propulsion solution capable of a power range of 300kW to 1,325kW.
Visedo developed an electric solution specifically for the Integrated L-Drive and Veth Propulsion will use Visedo’s technology exclusively for the application. The propulsion system has been already ordered for several projects currently under construction: one vessel designed for serving the aquaculture industry and two separate yachts.
Both agreements are significant for Visedo, given the market position of both partners, and the Finnish manufacturer’s tech is set to break into new segments of the marine industry.
Of the Kongsberg agreement Visedo CEO Kimmo Rauma said:

General Manager of Kongsberg Evotec, Steinar Aabelvik said:

Of the Veth partnership Mr Rauma said:
“As well as delivering hybrid and electric solutions for primary propulsion solutions of marine vessels, Visedo is now ensuring thruster power can be delivered with zero-emissions and lower fuel costs.
“Visedo’s partnership with leading international marine power provider Veth Propulsion will set a new standard for high-performance thrusters in terms of overall energy delivery and power-to-weight/space efficiency.
“The collaboration made sense after both companies witnessed the growing demand in high-efficiency compact electric propulsion solutions that reduce fuel costs and associated emissions for the marine operator and overall industry.”
These two agreements mark an industrious start to 2017 for Visedo’s marine aspirations. Earlier this year the company helped launch Asia’s first hybrid electric passenger ferry in Taiwan. Last month Finland’s first fully electric ferry was launched, featuring a Visedo propulsion system. Visedo is also developing the propulsion systems for the first hybrid electric trimarans, and the world’s largest electric ferry project, E-Ferry.
