With the opening of another Power Swap Station (PSS) in Sankt Augustin, North Rhine-Westphalia, NIO is setting another milestone in the consistent expansion of its charging infrastructure in Europe: the 20th PSS in Germany is also the 60th European PSS. The new second-generation PSS is capable of carrying out up to 312 battery swaps per day and storing up to 13 batteries. It therefore offers NIO users maximum convenience, flexibility and efficiency when operating their vehicles. ‘This is a significant milestone for our growing network of Power Swap Stations in Europe,’ explains Kajsa Ivansson Sognefur, Head of Power Europe at NIO. ‘60 stations in Europe is a strong signal of our continued commitment to provide the most convenient and innovative energy solutions to users across the continent.’ As part of the grid expansion, NIO has also launched its flexible battery upgrade in Germany, Norway, the Netherlands and Sweden. This offer enables BaaS (Battery-as-a-Service) users to swap their standard battery at PSS for a battery with a long range for 30 days – ideal for all users who only have a short-term need for increased mobility and therefore range, for example when travelling. A smart approach to sustainable mobility: users only pay for the additional capacity when they really need it. This reduces overall costs and makes electric mobility more flexible than ever before. Booking is convenient via the NIO app.
With its Power Grid Services, NIO is also making an active contribution to stabilising European power grids and the energy transition in Europe at its PSS. The Power Cloud system is used to intelligently control charging cycles at PSS – when there is a surplus of energy in the grid, they charge stored batteries; when the grid load is high, they automatically reduce their own power requirements in favour of grid stability. By reacting in a matter of seconds to sudden fluctuations in supply associated with the increasing feed-in of renewable energy, PSS support local and regional grid stability.
