Electric cars are increasingly becoming part of the energy system rather than simply another electricity consumer. With the expansion of Polestar Energy, Polestar is combining vehicle-controlled smart charging with financial incentives for drivers who allow their charging behaviour to respond flexibly to conditions in the electricity grid.
The principle is simple: an electric car often remains connected at home for many hours but needs only part of that time to recharge. Charging can therefore be shifted to periods when electricity demand and prices are lower.
Together with Octopus Energy, Polestar has expanded its so-called Grid Rewards in markets including Germany and France. Drivers who charge intelligently and help relieve pressure on the grid can be financially rewarded. In Germany, Polestar says customers using an Intelligent Octopus electricity tariff can save up to 50 percent on individual home charging sessions and, depending on usage and conditions, up to €300 per year.
What is particularly interesting is that smart charging no longer necessarily depends on a specific connected wallbox. With the Polestar 2 and Polestar 4, the vehicle itself increasingly takes over charging control and can optimize charging times based on electricity prices, household demand and grid conditions.
Smart charging is not yet the same as vehicle-to-grid. Electricity is not fed back from the vehicle battery into the grid. Instead, the charging demand itself becomes flexible. This alone has considerable potential if millions of electric cars increasingly shift their charging away from periods of peak demand.
