Guided by tradition, driven by electricity: the all-electric Porsche Macan crosses Morecambe Bay

Crossing Morecambe Bay in North-West England is unlike any conventional road trip. At low tide, around 310 square kilometres of seabed emerge, creating a temporary route across sand, water channels and unpredictable terrain. But the crossing is dangerous without expert guidance — tides return rapidly, river channels constantly shift and soft sand can quickly become a trap.

For almost 500 years, travelers have relied on the King’s Guide to the Sands, a historic role dating back to 1548. Today, Michael Wilson continues this tradition, leading people safely across the bay while protecting its unique wildlife and fragile ecosystem.

Now, the all-electric Porsche Macan 4S has taken on this remarkable challenge. Following Wilson’s tractor across approximately 15 kilometres of exposed seabed, the Macan demonstrated how modern electric mobility can adapt even to extreme and unconventional environments.

The constantly changing surface demanded precise control and reliable traction. Equipped with intelligent all-wheel drive, adaptive air suspension and an optional off-road package, the fully electric Porsche Marcan 4S handled compact sand, shallow water crossings and softer terrain with impressive composure. The low centre of gravity created by the battery layout provided additional stability, while the instant torque delivery ensured smooth and controlled progress.

What makes this journey particularly fascinating is the contrast between centuries-old tradition and cutting-edge EV technology. There are no roads, no markings and no fixed routes — only the experience of the King’s Guide and the capability of the vehicle.

At the same time, the crossing underlines the importance of sustainability and environmental responsibility. Morecambe Bay is one of Britain’s most important natural habitats, attracting around 250,000 migratory birds every winter. Every route across the bay must respect the delicate ecosystem.

The journey proves that electric vehicles are capable of far more than urban commuting. In Morecambe Bay, the Porsche Macan showed that electric performance, off-road capability and environmental awareness can successfully work together — even where land and sea constantly change places.
