Future taxi project: Vattenfall fast-charging stations for e-taxis at Lidl

Since the beginning of the year, only locally emission-free taxis have been allowed to be newly registered in Hamburg. Around 700 are already on the streets of the Hanseatic city. To make it easier for taxi drivers to make the switch, the city has launched the ‘Future Taxi’ project in close cooperation with the industry, which supports the purchase of electric vehicles as well as the construction of fast-charging infrastructure, making it a pioneer throughout Germany. Vattenfall is equipping a total of 13 areas provided by Lidl in Germany with 26 fast-charging points for electric taxis, making it the largest provider of fast-charging infrastructure for taxis in the project.

At the stations, which can be used exclusively by taxi drivers, they will be able to charge their electric taxis quickly and conveniently while they take a short break. All locations have therefore been selected so that they cover the entire cityscape and allow short distances to the charging stop. Planning has already begun and should be completed in early summer. Construction and installation of the first charging stations is expected to begin in July 2025. According to the current planning status, the first location will be at the Lidl shop at Kieler Straße 595 b.

‘With these fast-charging stations, we are making Hamburg a model city for the electrification of taxi transport and creating the necessary infrastructure for a smooth transition,’ says Fabian Hagmann, Vice President E-Mobility at Vattenfall. “Lidl is providing the space and we are ensuring that the taxis can be charged quickly, efficiently and with 100 per cent renewable energy. In doing so, we can draw on our many years of experience in Sweden. Vattenfall is the basic supplier in Hamburg, so the location is of particular importance to us. At the same time, we hope that this project will also send a signal to other cities and are naturally also happy to be a partner here.”

The city has already been able to award around 4.2 million euros in funding in three stages for the purchase of emission-free taxis. A further, fourth stage is to follow this year, in which only combustion taxis can be exchanged for e-taxis and funding of up to 5,000 euros per vehicle is possible. The aim is to offer other cities a model for the electrification of taxi transport in the coming years.

Dr Anjes Tjarks, Senator of the Ministry of Transport and Mobility Transition of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, explains: “The Zukunftstaxi project impressively demonstrates that climate protection, modern urban mobility and the economy can go hand in hand to make the city a better place to live for everyone. By providing exclusive charging infrastructure for taxis, we are setting new standards for the electrification of taxi transport. That shows: Hamburg’s economy and taxi industry are innovative. With the support of the industry and major partners from the business community, the project will receive a further major boost to bring the fast-charging infrastructure even further into the area. Together, we are making Hamburg a model city for sustainable modern mobility.”
