SCALEbat: How EDAG anticipated scalable battery platforms in 2019

As we continue our journey back through the history of the eMove360° Award, some winning projects demonstrate just how early their developers recognised the key challenges of electric mobility.

In 2019, EDAG Engineering GmbH won the eMove360° Award in the Battery & Powertrain category with SCALEbat – a modular and scalable battery housing developed together with Siemens Industry Software, Baomarc Automotive Solutions and Cloos Schweißtechnik.

The concept was designed to help established vehicle manufacturers, new OEMs and start-ups reduce development time and costs when creating flexible electric vehicle platforms.

Its high-strength steel roll-formed frame could be adapted to different vehicle sizes, battery modules and power levels. Optimised load paths addressed international crash requirements, while an aluminium sandwich floor combined underride protection with three separate cooling circuits.

Active valve control enabled the temperature of individual battery modules to be managed according to demand. An additively manufactured and flow-optimised coolant manifold also demonstrated how 3D printing could become economically viable for production volumes of up to 300,000 units per year.

The basic SCALEbat architecture was designed for battery capacities of 57, 86 and 114 kWh. A continuous digital engineering and PLM process connected concept development, crash and flow simulation, prototyping, production planning and the digital Smart Factory.

Seven years later, modular battery architectures, thermal safety, flexible production and shorter development cycles remain central challenges for the electric vehicle industry. SCALEbat therefore stands as an excellent example of the foresight represented by the eMove360° Award.
