The transition toward carbon-neutral mobility represents one of the most profound societal and cultural transformations of our time. Positioned between established industrial structures, emerging mobility solutions, and evolving energy systems, private vehicle users are increasingly confronted with complex and often contradictory information regarding energy efficiency, resource availability, and the climate impact of different propulsion technologies. This situation complicates informed decision-making and hampers meaningful public participation in the mobility transition.

This contribution presents an accessible yet technically sound framework aimed at strengthening energy literacy in the context of everyday mobility. The framework is documented in an 88-page Energy and Mobility Guide (“Heilbronn-Franken”), developed for technically interested citizens and practitioners. It introduces fundamental concepts of energy and power and relates them to typical energy demands of motor vehicles and households, both on an individual and an aggregated national scale. Key characteristics of energy generation technologies—ranging from conventional power plants to wind energy, large-scale photovoltaics, and small decentralized systems such as balcony solar installations—are explained using comparable figures and practical reference values.

Central to the approach are nine real-world emobility case studies documenting how drivers with diverse age groups, electric vehicle types, and usage patterns actively engage with their energy consumption. These examples demonstrate that significant reductions in energy use are achievable without compromising mobility needs, while also illustrating the cumulative impact of individual choices at a societal level. Comparisons with alternative modes of transport, including lightweight electric vehicles, pedelecs, and walking, further contextualize these findings.

By bridging expert knowledge and everyday experience, the presented concept supports drivers in evolving into informed energy citizens. It fosters a deeper understanding of energy flows in mobility systems and encourages active engagement with energy-related decisions as a key element of a sustainable mobility transition.
