Shell Recharge is pushing ahead with the modernization of its fast-charging infrastructure in Germany. By the end of August 2026, the company had upgraded 150 fast-charging points at more than 40 locations with new hardware. At least 50 additional charging points are scheduled to follow by the end of the year.
Rather than focusing solely on expanding the number of charging points, the program is aimed primarily at improving technical reliability. Shell currently operates around 2,400 fast-charging points in Germany, both at its own locations and together with partners. By replacing older charging systems, the company intends to improve availability and technical stability. At selected locations, charging power will also be increased.
“The next phase of electric mobility will not be decided by the number of charging points alone, but by their reliability in everyday use,” says Florian Glattes, Head of Shell Mobility Germany, Austria and Switzerland. “That is why we are proactively investing in the modernization of our charging network. EV drivers should be able to rely on their charging sessions starting easily and working reliably.”
As the number of electric vehicles continues to grow, the quality of existing charging infrastructure is becoming increasingly important. For drivers, it is not only a question of whether a charging station is available, but also whether it is operational and whether charging can begin without technical problems.
Shell Recharge therefore sees the overall charging experience as an important part of its strategy. “Modern hardware is an important building block of our EV offering,” Glattes continues. “This also includes a user-friendly charging process, different payment options, digital services and close monitoring of the locations – as well as, of course, a convenience offering in the shop and Shell Café that is tailored to the target group.”
With the ongoing modernization program, Shell Recharge aims to improve its existing infrastructure while continuing to expand the network. Florian Glattes: “With the modernization program, Shell Recharge is underlining its long-term commitment to expanding reliable charging infrastructure in Germany and supporting the further spread of electric vehicles.”
