US start-up Slate has announced a compact electric truck priced from $24,950. With a deliberately simple design, modular body concept and more than 200 accessories, the company aims to make electric mobility more affordable and adaptable. First deliveries are expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Rather than following the industry trend towards ever larger screens and increasingly complex vehicle systems, Slate is returning to basics. The electric pickup uses tactile controls, has no central touchscreen and is said to contain fewer than half the components of a typical truck.
“More than 180,000 reservation holders have told us they’re ready for a vehicle that’s affordable, reliable, and built around their lives,” said Slate CEO Peter Faricy. “Slate gives customers the freedom to buy only what they need today and personalize their vehicle as their needs change tomorrow. We’re excited to start seeing Slates on roads across America later this year.”
From pickup to SUV
The Slate can be ordered as a pickup and converted into an SUV later. Two SUV versions, named Squareback and Fastback, will also be available from $29,950.
Customers will be able to personalize the vehicle with more than 200 accessories, including roof racks, audio systems, removable seat covers and lighting elements. More than 100 wrap colors are planned for launch, with a full vehicle wrap expected to cost less than $500.
The estimated range has been increased to 205 miles, equivalent to around 330 kilometres. Towing capacity stands at up to 2,000 pounds, while payload capacity reaches 1,550 pounds.
Slate is also emphasizing repairability. Owners will be able to carry out many repairs themselves using the Slate U platform, while a network of more than 3,000 RepairPal workshops will support more complex service requirements. The battery and electric powertrain will be covered by a ten-year or 110,000-mile warranty.
Production is planned at a reindustrialized factory in Warsaw, Indiana, where Slate intends to invest almost $400 million and create more than 2,000 jobs.
