Turning Used Tires into Door Handles: How to close the resource loop

Recyclable material cycles are an important measure for conserving resources. At Mercedes-Benz, old tires will in future be turned into new plastic parts through chemical recycling. The plastic will be obtained from a combination of pyrolysis oil and biomethane from agricultural waste in cooperation with various partners. This feedstock replaces fossil raw materials using the mass balance approach. Each partner contributes its know-how to the process: Starting with used tires from Mercedes-Benz for tire pyrolysis at Pyrum, plastic production at BASF and handle production at WITTE Automotive, and assembly at Mercedes-Benz. The sustainable and chemically identical drop-in solution is being explored for other components.

Wertstoffkreisläufe sind eine wichtige Maßnahme, um Ressourcen zu schonen. Bei MercedesBenz werden künftig Altreifen durch chemisches Recycling zu neuen Kunststoffteilen. Der Kunststoff wird in Zusammenarbeit mit unterschiedlichen Partnern aus einer Kombination von PyrolyseÖl und Biomethan aus Landwirtschaftsabfällen gewonnen. Dieser Feedstock ersetzt fossile Rohstoffe nach dem Massenbilanz
ansatz. Jeder Partner bringt dabei sein KnowHow ein: Angefangen mit Altreifen von MercedesBenz für die ReifenPyrolyse bei Pyrum, über die Kunststoffherstellung bei BASF und die Grifffertigung bei WITTE Auto
motive bis hin zur Montage bei MercedesBenz. Die nachhaltige und chemisch identische DropIn Lösung wird für weitere Bauteile sondiert.
