SKINCAST
SKINCAST®, a registered trademark of Mercedes-Benz, refers to structural castings produced using the advanced BIONICAST®-process. This process pushes the period of validity of the previously applicable minimum wall thickness in the aluminium die-casting process to the absolute limit of what is technically feasible. Thin units subject to only slight stress are enclosed by a “skin” cast with minimal wall thickness, thereby achieving the same function with the lightest possible weight. Never before have such thin-walled units been produced in the aluminium die-casting process for a raw aluminum die-cast structure, such as the shock-absorber strut tower of a future production vehicle presented here.

SKINCAST®, eine eingetragene Marke von Mercedes-Benz, steht für Strukturgussteile, die mithilfe des weiterentwickelten BIONICAST®-Prozesses entwickelt werden. Das Verfahren verschiebt die bisher gültige minimale Wanddicke im Aluminiumdruckgussprozess an die absolute Grenze des technisch Machbaren. Dünne, nur gering belastete Bereiche werden durch eine in minimaler Wandstärke gegossene „Haut“ geschlossen und dadurch mit dem geringstmöglichen Gewicht bei gleicher Funktion ausgeführt. Nie zuvor wurden im Aluminiumdruckgussprozess derartige dünnwandige Bereiche in einer Aluminiumdruckguss-Rohbaustruktur, wie dem hier vorgestellten Dämpferbeindom, eines zukünftigen Serienfahrzeugs realisiert.
