Europe’s Opportunity for Next-Generation Battery Technology – Made in Germany!

How can Europe strengthen its position in battery technology while reducing costs, resource dependency and environmental impact?

We are delighted to welcome Dr.-Ing. Ulrich Ehmes, CEO of theion GmbH, as a speaker at eMove360° Europe 2026!

In his presentation, “Europe’s Opportunity for Next-Generation Battery Technology,” Dr. Ehmes will explore the potential of sulfur-based batteries as an alternative to conventional lithium-ion technology.

Today’s battery materials, such as nickel, manganese and cobalt, present significant challenges in terms of weight, cost and availability. Sulfur offers a promising alternative: it is abundant, lightweight and comparatively inexpensive.

Berlin-based theion is developing next-generation battery cells combining crystalline sulfur with a patented lithium anode, targeting:

⚡ Three times the energy density of today’s lithium-ion cells

💰 One-third of today’s battery cell costs

🌱 One-third of today’s CO₂ footprint

These ambitious development targets could open new opportunities for electric mobility, aviation, aerospace and other energy-intensive applications.

Dr. Ehmes will provide insights into the current development status of theion’s technology and discuss how European innovation can contribute to the future of battery production.

Made in Europe. Made in Germany. Made in Berlin.
