Automatic emergency braking has become one of the most important safety functions in modern vehicles. Yet the technology still faces a stubborn weakness: phantom braking. When cameras or radar misinterpret shadows, glare, overpasses or road surfaces as hazards, vehicles may brake suddenly even though no real collision risk exists. Such false activations undermine driver confidence and can create new dangers for following traffic.
The challenge is particularly acute at night. Visible-light cameras depend on illumination and may struggle with pedestrians in dark clothing, fog, rain or rapidly changing light. Radar provides reliable distance and speed data, but often lacks the resolution needed for precise object classification. This becomes critical as pedestrian protection requirements become stricter and regulators demand better detection with fewer unnecessary interventions.
Thermal imaging could close this gap. Unlike conventional cameras, longwave infrared sensors detect emitted heat rather than reflected light. Pedestrians, animals and other objects can therefore remain visible even in darkness, glare, smoke, fog or dust. Combined with visible cameras, radar and AI-based perception, thermal data adds another layer of confirmation before the braking system reacts.
This multimodal approach is increasingly relevant under FMVSS No. 127, which raises expectations for automatic emergency braking in daylight and darkness while also testing false activations. Systems must not only detect real threats earlier, but also distinguish harmless objects such as steel road plates or vehicles in adjacent lanes.
Thermal cameras were once limited mainly to premium vehicles, but falling costs, improved sensors and safety-certified platforms are changing their role. For OEMs and suppliers, thermal-fused AI now offers a realistic path toward more reliable pedestrian detection, smoother braking decisions and greater trust in automated safety systems. It could become a key building block on the road toward Vision Zero.
