Mercedes-Benz is opening its first battery recycling factory in Kuppenheim on Monday. VDI Director Adrian Willig is calling for more such initiatives in order to remain at the forefront of technology. ‘The Mercedes-Benz battery recycling factory is a milestone because it efficiently returns raw materials through a high recycling rate and thus reduces dependence on the global market. This reduces greenhouse gas emissions and strengthens sustainable mobility. The VDI emphasises that e-mobility will only be climate-friendly if both production and recycling are ‘green’. This technology now needs to be scaled up to an industrial scale in order to realise its full potential and ensure long-term sustainability,’ says VDI Director Adrian Willig. ‘Without recycling in Germany, there will be no progress.’
In its life cycle assessment study from 2023, the VDI already emphasised that e-mobility will only be climate-friendly when the entire battery production and recycling process becomes ‘green’. Recycling plays a central role in this. ‘Now it will be a matter of scaling up to an industrial scale,’ says Willig.
