Volvo EX90: herald and flagship

The Volvo EX90 is the first software-defined Volvo model to set the benchmark in terms of drive, safety, connectivity and infotainment. It is both a technical innovation and a family car, offering up to seven seats in an airy interior, driving the use of leather alternatives and recycled materials, and underpinning the Swedish premium brand’s leadership in electrification and the protection of occupants and other road users.

The Volvo EX90 is the brand’s first model based on the new SPA2 (Scalable Product Architecture 2) technology and vehicle architecture developed by Volvo itself. By integrating state-of-the-art computer hardware, software and sensor technology, Volvo is taking a major step towards the goal of accident-free traffic and at the same time creating the conditions for the unsupervised autonomous driving of the future. The lidar sensor integrated into the front roofline provides unprecedented detection performance, while the driver monitoring system detects signs of distraction or drowsiness at an early stage.

With a length of just over five metres, the Volvo EX90 combines an elegant, aerodynamically optimized design with a generous amount of space. Depending on the chosen configuration, the Swedish brand’s new top model offers five, six or seven seats in up to three rows. Three powerful drive variants with a maximum of 380 kW (517 hp), two battery sizes for WLTP ranges of up to 614 kilometers and three equipment lines are available.

Three drive variants

The Volvo EX90 is available in three all-electric drive variants: as a Single Motor with 205 kW (279 hp) and 490 Nm of torque in conjunction with rear-wheel drive, as a Twin Motor AWD with two electric motors on the front and rear axles, a total output of 300 kW (408 hp) and a maximum torque of 770 Nm, and as a Twin Motor Performance AWD with 380 kW (517 hp) and 910 Nm. A 104 kWh high-voltage battery is used in the Single Motor version, which enables a WLTP range of up to 580 kilometers. In the two Twin Motor versions, a 111 kWh high-voltage battery enables ranges of up to 614 kilometers.

While an 11 kW on-board charger ensures quick and easy charging at home and on the road, the battery can be charged at DC fast charging stations with up to 250 kW charging power. This allows the charge level to be topped up from ten to 80 percent in just 30 minutes (single motor: 29 minutes). The intelligent temperature management for the battery with separate cooling circuits ensures a shorter charging time and optimum utilization of the available range.

Bidirectional charging

The Volvo EX90 is the first Volvo vehicle to be prepared for bidirectional charging on the hardware side. This transforms the vehicle into a mobile energy storage unit that can temporarily store electricity and release it again when required. In conjunction with the future integrated “Smart Charging” function** of the Volvo Cars smartphone app, the vehicle will be charged as soon as the demand for electricity is low and energy prices are correspondingly low – usually when a lot of renewable energy, for example from wind and solar power, is available in the electricity mix. This temporarily stored energy can be used to supply your own home with electricity. Depending on the regulations of the regional energy market, the Volvo EX90 can also support the public power grid and thus balance out peak loads in conjunction with other electric cars with bidirectional charging options.
