Vulcan Energy: Building permit granted for lithium and geothermal plant in Landau

Vulcan Energy has received the official building permit for its Lithium Extraction Plant (LEP) in the D12 industrial area in Landau. Together with the already approved facilities – the ORC geothermal power plant and the substation – the company now holds all the necessary permits for the combined geothermal and lithium plant (G-LEP). The documents were handed over to Christian Freitag, CCO and Managing Director of Vulcan Energie Ressourcen GmbH, during the groundbreaking ceremony for the new industrial area.

The G-LEP uses hot geothermal brine from the Upper Rhine Graben to simultaneously generate renewable energy and produce climate-neutral lithium. After the heat has been extracted for power and district heating generation, lithium is extracted before the brine is reinjected into the reservoir. The recovered lithium chloride is processed in Frankfurt-Höchst into battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate – entirely without the use of fossil fuels.

Lithium hydroxide for 500,000 electric vehicles per year:
The plants in Landau and Frankfurt are expected to produce up to 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide annually – enough for around 500,000 electric vehicle batteries. In addition, Vulcan will generate approximately 275 GWh of green electricity and 560 GWh of heat each year. Construction of the G-LEP is scheduled to begin later this year, following the completion of ongoing financing.

Christian Freitag emphasizes:
“With this final building permit, we have reached an important milestone in our Lionheart Project and are delighted to be working together with the City of Landau towards a climate-neutral energy future.”
