There’s someone who wants to prove that you can not only get anywhere with electric power, but even travel the world: Eight-time Guinness World Record holder Rainer Zietlow set off on July 1st in an ID. Buzz from the customer center at the Bulli factory in Hanover. The 55-year-old from Mannheim and his team plan to cross 75 countries. Interested parties can find their current whereabouts and reports from previous journeys on their website, www.idbuzz-worldtour.com. The eastern leg of the tour will take Zietlow to New Zealand and the western leg to Vancouver, Canada. Wherever roads exist, the team will complete the record-breaking journey on wheels, pausing only for ship passages and necessary breaks for customs clearance. The ID. Buzz World Tour will last more than eight months.
“With the ID. Buzz’s 86 kWh battery, we can achieve ranges of more than 400 kilometers per charge,” Zietlow calculates, “so I can even cover stages through sparsely populated stretches.” His ID. Buzz corresponds to the production version, but has an additional charger on board so that it can also take high-voltage current of up to 125 amps and convert it into direct current in places where there are no fast chargers or where the standard for direct current charging is different, such as in China, Japan, and North America. Zietlow is not lacking in experience: “I’ve traveled to more than 110 countries so far and even made it as far as Qatar with my ID. Buzz predecessor,” the Mannheim native reflects. He spent about a year preparing for his current tour: “I’m not a factory driver; I’m driving on my own account, supported by my partners.”
This includes Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the manufacturer of the ID. Buzz. “We’re very impressed that Rainer has the courage and expertise to undertake such a circumnavigation of the world in an electric car,” said Lars Krause, member of the brand’s Board of Management at the launch in Hanover. “I myself drive a lot of long distances in the ID. Buzz and can report that, at least in Europe, charging is really no longer a problem. Rainer’s team will certainly inspire many people to switch to a fully electric vehicle with his tour.”
The supply of spare parts for the ID. Buzz is also secured in case of emergency: The model has now been introduced in many of the countries Rainer Zietlow is traveling through, including Indonesia and Australia, Taiwan and Japan, the USA, and Canada.
