Battery replacement technology: Nio partners with Geely and Changan

NIO announces two pioneering partnerships in the field of battery replacement technology. A strategic cooperation with Changan Automobile and with Zhejiang Geely Holding Group (“Geely”). The partnership with Changan Automobile includes the joint development of standards for exchangeable batteries, the establishment and joint use of a battery exchange system and the promotion of vehicles with exchangeable batteries. Changan Automobile is one of the four largest automotive groups in China. With a domestic and global production presence that achieved cumulative sales of 25.6 million units by October 2023.

The strategic partnership with Geely aims to promote the standardization of battery swapping technology, expand the power swapping network and accelerate the electrification of the automotive industry. Geely Holding Group, based in Hangzhou, employs more than 120,000 people and owns several leading brands, including Geely Auto, Lynk & Co, ZEEKR, Volvo Cars, Polestar, Lotus and is one of the largest investors in Mercedes-Benz Group AG.

Expansion plans for Europe

NIO is continuing to expand its charging and battery exchange network across Europe in order to optimally cover individual energy requirements on the road. In Europe, NIO has 28 Power Swap Stations, ten Power Charger Stations and access to over 500,000 charging points from third-party providers in eleven European countries. In mid-November, the eighth PSS in Germany was opened in Emsbüren, Lower Saxony. The PSS in Emsbüren is the first unmanned station in Germany to be operated completely independently and without staff. All previous and future PSSs will follow this operating model. In the near future, nine more PSSs will go into operation in Germany and expand NIO’s battery network. These include the first third-generation PSS, which can carry out up to 408 swaps per day. This corresponds to an increase of 30 percent compared to the PSS 2.0 and increases the total capacity from 13 to 21 batteries. NIO has already established its first European factory in Biatorbágy, Hungary in 2022, which includes the assembly and after-sales service of battery swap stations, training for power operations in Europe and research and development of NIO Power products. Further details can be found on the Power Map.
