Electric two-wheeler manufacturer NIU becomes a member of the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium

NIU, one of the world’s leading suppliers of electric vehicles on two wheels, joins the Swappable Batteries Motorcycle Consortium (SBMC). This brings the number of members in the consortium, which was only founded in September 2021 by KTM, Honda, Piaggio and Yamaha, to 21.  The goal of the consortium is a common standard for quick-change batteries. The introduction of swappable battery systems through new and common technical specifications should enable cross-brand interoperability of swappable batteries to facilitate their application and advance sustainable mobility.

In the near future, the SBMC plans to introduce battery exchange stations in urban areas. There, riders will be able to exchange the discharged batteries of their two-wheelers for fully charged ones in a few simple steps. This technology of exchangeable batteries will drastically shorten charging times, eliminate range anxiety and reduce costs for end users, the SBMC is certain. It will also facilitate the reuse of batteries for a second life in the spirit of the circular economy. www.niu.com.; www.sb-mc.net
